Designated a “biosphere reserve” by UNESCO along with its surrounding region and the Gâtinais Regional Nature Park, it is one of the largest and most beautiful state-owned forests in France.

Considered the “Green Lung” of the Île-de-France region, the Fontainebleau Forest spans more than 17,000 hectares in a single contiguous area, extended by the 3,300 hectares of the Trois Pignons State Forest, giving it the advantage of offering varied landscapes and exceptional sites.

Numerous facilities have been developed to welcome the public.
As an educational center, the Forest Discovery Center (CIF) welcomes groups of schoolchildren and adults throughout the year.

In 2013, the Fontainebleau National Forest became the first in France to be designated a “Forêt d’exception” (Exceptional Forest), a distinction recognizing its rich heritage and biodiversity.
