A pupil of Joseph Coosemans (1828-1904), painter at the Tervuren artists' colony, Edmond Verstraeten follows in the tradition of landscape artists.
Later, Verstraeten apprenticed with Emile Claus (1849-1924), light being a central element in his luminist paintings.
